Dragonia

Races and Personalities

Dragons

Dragons are the undisputed rulers of Dragonia. They have lived here for all time, and will continue to live here beyond time. Dragon lifespans are so long they can be considered immortal, especially to the most recent infestation of Dragonia, humans.

Dragons come in two general varieties: oriental and occidental. Oriental dragons all fly, pass through different phases or appearances during their life, and are generally more peaceable than their occidental cousins. However, they are vigilant in defense of their territory. Western dragons are larger, heavier, and can only fly with wings. Dragons come in a variety of colors and appearances.

All dragons are born in the hatching cave. When it comes time for a female dragon to lay her eggs, she must make her way to that place to lay them. Then, she is free to abandon them--baby dragons take very good care of themselves. A dragon's first struggle in life is to find his or her way out of the labyrinthine cave complex, while surviving the many perils within.

Oates

Oates is the great male Archdragon of Dragonia. It is rumored that he raised the cliff walls around Dragonia to keep more humans from entering this crater. His mate is Scanth. Their cave is well concealed in the crater walls.

Scanth

Scanth is the great female Archdragon of Dragonia. Sages tell that when she awoke and discovered humans were invading her crater home, she called on nature to smash their dwellings and wash them from Dragonia. If that is true, she is likely to be unhappy to discover a small settlement of survivors beginning to thrive at the far end of her domain. She is the mate of Oates.

Humans

Humans are alternately called the scourge and salvation of Dragonia. They tame the land, but hurt more than they realize with their limited perceptions of time.

Humans in Dragonia are more often than not survivors of the original settlement.

Humans record time in years. One year is the passing of four human seasons. Humans prefer that their history be recorded as this:

ca. -5000 The Great Battle between humans and dragons for Dragonia. Humans are driven out of the Dragonia crater.
-6 Humans rediscover the Dragonia crater. Most dragons are dormant, so the old legends are dismissed and settlement is planned.
-1 King Suryondra, the human ruler outside the Dragonia crater gives his blessing to the settlers who are travelling to Dragonia to form his latest trade outpost.
0 Humans found a town, Suryondraton at the mouth of the Dragonia crater. Trade begins with the human kingdom.
1 Humans begin to see strange smoke coming from mountains to the west in the crater. Children report seeing dragons, but these are dismissed by the adults.
3 The Year of Unending Rain. Massive rains flood the crater rivers. The mouth of the Dragonia crater becomes a waterfall as the lands outside drop. Great earthquakes shake the entire crater. Suryondraton is broken by the earthquakes, then flooded under the new Lake of Sorrows. The humans are decimated. Most flee to the high grounds in the south of the crater in the small town of Woodbridge, which becomes the new human community. The humans are cut off from the outside world.
4 More earthquakes herald the reawakening of the ancient dragons Oates and Scanth. Other dragons rise with them. The crater walls rise like sheer cliffs above Dragonia, sealing it.
11 The present day. Humans begin to venture outside their small settlements in the southeast of Dragonia and begin to explore this crater again.
